Dismal Swamp

Outside of Oriental NC

Elizabeth City's modern waterfront condos

Elizabeth City Harbor

Elizabeth City Marina
The city has a tradition of giving a rose to boaters that stop in their town. We didn't need a rose.

Look closely , there are lots of flowers on these porches. We could smell the fragrance as we past by.

Bridge at entrance to Dismal Swamp

We kept anticipating dreary sights

The swamp was narrow but not forlorn

South Mills Lock opens 4 times a day. We were greeted by a barking dog and the lock master.
The rise was 8 feet.

The white truck in the photo is driven by the lock Master who is also the bridge tender. After he locks a boat through he jump in his vehicle and drive 1/2 mile to open the bridge so the boat can pass. We almost beat him to the bridge.

The bridge

Captain will we fit through this part of the swamp?

We stopped 1/2 way at the NC visitor's center. Tut supervised the maintenance checks.

Tut discreetly tells Andrew he forgot to close the sea cock.

I found Dismal Swamp lush with greenery.

The Swamp goes through two states, VA and NC.

The same marker is used for both states.

According to the sign this is the Park supervisor's house.

Dismal Swamp is 22 miles long.

Tim from NYC's sail boat rafted to Freedom at a grocery store free dock on the VA portion of the Dismal Swamp.

Deep Creek Lock

We're out , next stop Portsmouth, Va.
