New York, New York

Staten Island Bridge

New York! New York! The fog is lifting.

June 1, 2010 our cruise through New York Harbor gave me a new prospective on the views. The variety of architectural designs amazes me. Brick, glass, concrete, wood, steel and various degrees and combinations of these materials attest to the greatness, past and present, of a city which can no longer afford to sleep.

Ellis Island, the entry point where my paternal and maternal grandparents (still unknown to each other), got off the boats that brought them to America. I wonder what they thought as the Statue of Liberty got closer and closer. I know what I thought, “Thank God we’re getting out of this choppy water”.

Perhaps they were glad to be done with sea sickness. Maybe they didn’t know why they were brought to this country by their parents. My parental grandparents died before I was born and my maternal grandfather passed away when I was 5 or 6. I don’t remember anyone in my family being a boating enthusiast so I’m guessing the overseas voyage shook the desire to sail or cruise out of them. This leaves me to fantasize about my great-great-grandparents who loved the sea. ARRH!

Holland Tunnel ventilation system building: There is one on each side of the river. How did you think air got into the tunnel?

Lackawanna Station where Andrew swears my sister and I took him.

The area with the tall fence is a Yacht club/marina

It was the last day of Fleet Week.

The ships are huge.

If you got within 10 yards the guards in the little red tug would yell at you to back off.

We think this was ' Intrepid'

The Hudson River has many unique buildings
